I’ve been trying to draw some more these past weeks. Sorry bout’ the poor photo quality. Continue reading this post
My creative past
Would you believe me if I said I used several years of my life as a young teenager designing wallpapers, banners, doing retouches, colorizations, blends and making brushes for Adobe Photoshop? I did indeed.
I have no idea how I even got started, how I found that very first thing making me want to do something similar. I remember being around 12 or 13 years old when downloading Paint Shop Pro for the very first time. I was so excited, although I had absolutely no idea how to even blend two photos. I honestly can’t remember what I created during that time, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t close to being a Monet worthy. I had no one to teach me how to use it, and the internet wasn’t that focused on tutorials as today. And this was before social media came along to spread the word .. Jesus christ, I’ll be able to say that to someone’s child some day! “Back in the days .. Before social media” .. Holy cow I’m old. Anyways.
After about 1 year with PSP (Paint Shop Pro) I had developed a serious crush on Photoshop. I visited all these creative websites where all of them stated they used Photoshop, so of course I wanted it too. One day I finally got a hold on it, and I tried it for a few weeks and I actually gave up. I just couldn’t figure out how to make anything, so I switched back to PSP. Through the next year or so, I slowly learned how to use Photoshop thanks to my stubbornness, and at the end of my PSP days I only used it to make frames on my creations. It took me a while to figure out how to do it in Photoshop.
I somehow got involved on Livejournal, the first succesful blogging tool, and also a great community. Through there I went on to messageboards, interacting with a lot of american girls around my age. We shared what we made in Photoshop with each other. Quite fun actually. The kids I hung out with at that time wasn’t interested in the same as me, perhaps painting in school, but not internet and Photoshop, so I developed my own little network online and made tons of themes for these messageboards.

As I said on Twitter earlier today: I’ve got something amazing next to me, and now I’m going to show it to you.

And now some of you might think: okay, so you went out and bought some wannabe iPad, and no. This is by no means an iPad, this is a Wacom Cintiq 12wx. Before the weekend I was actually finding pictures of this beauty, because I wanted to prepare a list of things I wanted, for a post on the blog. And as it has happened before, once I thought about it – it landed in my lap short time after.
Unfortunately, it’s not mine, I’ve simply borrowed it from my friend B, as a tool for a digital drawing I’m making for our project. But no one says I can’t have fun with it while having it. To those of you who are still a bit confused about this thing. The Wacom Cintiq 12wx is a tablet or a digitizer, what ever you might call it. It has a built-in screen, which makes it one of the more expensive tablets, but also makes it so much better and easier to work with. You draw directly on the screen, and the pen can sense pressure, angle and all of that. So it’s incredibly easy to work with, and you can create amazing things, if you have the skills that is.

I’ve wanted one of these for God knows how long, and sooner or later I will definitely purchase one – and I prefer sooner. I think it’s one of the things that would make me as happy as my camera has done. I never expected I would become as happy about photography as I did, so I’m deeply thankful that my parents gave it to me as a graduation present. This one might become a present for myself, making sort of a promise to myself, that I will always try to become better at drawing. To give you a hint of what you can do with it, here’s some examples.
Of course, these people are SKILLED, but my point is, the results of working with a tablet can be amazing.
Ink on paper
So as you know by now, I’m working on my application for a university in New Zealand. Since the course I’m applying to is under “art and design”, I have to make a portfolio to go with my application. And damn, that’s a tough job. I don’t even feel like I have a lot to choose from, I don’t really make that much creative work. However, I scanned a couple of my drawings, and I thought I might as well show it to you guys. So here’s one of them, as you might see, it’s not actually finished, but somehow it feels for me as if it doesn’t need to be. And honestly, I have no idea what I thought about when I made it, and I have no idea if there’s an actual meaning to it. So no deep feelings to tell.

Being creative.
